Mailbox Monday is the
gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their
mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy,
toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

It seems like ages since I've written a Mailbox Monday post! I've been struggling with some dental issues (ugh!) but I've been stockpiling books nonetheless!

I recently discovered British author, Ann Cleeves. She's the amazing author behind the PBS series Shetland and also the ITV series Vera. And knowing the book is always better, I purchased all available books from both series as well as a few titles from other British authors:
The Crow Trap is the first book in Ann Cleeves' Vera Stanhope series - which is now a major ITV detective drama starring Brenda Blethyn, VERA. Three very different women come together at isolated Baikie's Cottage on the North Pennines, to complete an environmental survey. Three women who each know the meaning of betrayal ...Rachael, the team leader, is still reeling after a double betrayal by her lover and boss, Peter Kemp. Anne, a botanist, sees the survey as a chance to indulge in a little deception of her own. And then there is Grace, a strange, uncommunicative young woman, hiding plenty of her own secrets. Rachael is the first to arrive at the cottage, where she discovers the body of her friend, Bella Furness. Bella, it appears, has committed suicide - a verdict Rachael refuses to accept. When another death occurs, a fourth woman enters the picture - the unconventional Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope ...Also available in the Vera Stanhope series are Telling Tales, Hidden Depths, Silent Voices and The Glass Room. Ann Cleeves' Shetland series (BBC television drama SHETLAND) contains five titles, of which Dead Water is the most recent.
I must admit that I had never heard of this author and discovered her quite by chance. I love British drama series and as I was browsing the selection on Hulu, I came across "Vera" starring Brenda Blethyn whom I simply adore. Once I realized this series was based on the books by Ann Cleeves, I immediately made it my mission to locate every book in the series. After all, we all know the book is so much better than any film adaptation! And I could not be more pleased with this first installment in the Vera Stanhope series. Cleeves is an amazing British author with a keen eye for detail, suspense, and insight into the human psyche. Each character is so well-developed and intriguing but none can compare to the eccentric Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope. The most appealing aspect of this lead female character is that she's not perfect; she's flawed and broken with a haunting past that only makes her both endearing and intriguing all at once. She doesn't necessarily play by the rules, and is rather unconventional and extremely driven by her investigative nature. The plot within "The Crow Trap" is filled with so many unexpected twists and turns, I was left guessing until the very end and often times I felt as though I should grab a notepad myself to piece together the evidence and analyze each suspect! An extremely well-written start to a series and I'm quite anxious to become even further acquainted with this talented writer. FIVE stars.
Pub owner Maura Donovan may have Irish kin, but she doesn’t seem to have the luck of the Irish. Who could have foreseen that bringing live music back to Sullivan’s Pub would lead to a dead musician?

Summer is ending in County Cork, Ireland, and with it the tourist season. Expat Maura Donovan is determined to keep Sullivan’s Pub in the black as the days grow shorter—but how? When she hears that the place was once a hot spot for Irish musicians who’d come play in the back room, she wonders if bringing back live music might be Sullivan’s salvation.

As word gets out, legendary musicians begin to appear at the pub, and the first impromptu jam session brings in scores of music lovers. But things hit a sour note when Maura finds a dead musician in the back room the next morning. With a slew of potential suspects, it’s going to take more than a pint and a good think to force a murderer to face the music.

My Thoughts:

What a pleasure it is to cross the pond and return once again to Sullivan's Pub and it's array of endearing characters! In this third installment of the County Cork Mysteries by Sheila Connolly, American expat, Maura Donovan is slowly getting settled into her new role as Pub Owner but there's a long music history behind Sullivan's that Maura quickly discovers. Bringing back the music to Sullivan's is just what Maura needs to keep Sullivan's afloat, but when a dead musician is discovered in the Pub will the taps quickly run dry at Sullivan's? Filled with unexpected twists and turns throughout, "An Early Wake" is sure to please cozy mystery fans. I absolutely adore the cast of characters, particularly Old Billy and Bridget; the two old-timers who always seem to be in the know of everything happening in Leap. And of course, Maura's love life seems to be blossoming unexpectedly with not one, but two, potential suitors! Who will win her heart? This is by far one of my favorite cozy series and I'm looking forward to the next installment, "A Turn For The Bad". FIVE Stars.
My Thoughts:

This was one of my many online purchases from the Book Depository in the U.K.(yes, they offer free world wide shipping too!) As a fan of the PBS series, Home Fires, I've been constantly searching for similar books set against the backdrop of World War 2 Britain. In "Keep The Home Fires Burning," Anne Bennett has created a remarkably gripping story of one family's struggle to survive and persevere during the war years. The author has certainly done her research and brings a great deal of historical accounts into the story that swiftly takes the reader back in time to that particular period filled with apprehension, fear, and the will to keep moving forward. She also provides the reader with the perspective of being a devout catholic family living in Britain during this period as well. The Whittaker family will capture your heart and stay with you long after the last page has been read as the experience the tragedies of war and the ever-present love that holds them together throughout the years. "Keep The Home Fires Burning" is an emotionally charged story with well-developed characters and a gripping plot...keep the tissues near by! I enjoyed every page of this and I'm looking forward to reading other novels by this amazing author!

My Thoughts:

I was first introduced to Ellie Dean's Beach View Boarding House Series this past summer when I was presented with an advance reader's copy of Book #9, Sealed With A Loving Kiss, and I was immediately captivated by the endearing cast of characters as well as Dean's emotionally compelling writing style. Although it read well as a stand alone novel, I immediately knew I had to go back a begin with the first book in this series and I was not disappointed in the least! This first installment is set against the early days of World War II and the children of London are being evacuated to the countryside. As a mother, I can't even begin to imagine what this must have been like, however, for Sally and Ernie, their mother doesn't seem to be particularly bothered at all and fails to even see her children off. At sixteen years old, Sally has had to grow up quickly and has become her brother's primary care provider while their father serves his country. Fortunately, Peggy Reilly has enough love in heart and a room to spare, and quickly embraces these young Londoners. Filled with love, hope, and the endearing bonds of friendship amid the onset of war, "There'll Be Blue Skies" is a compelling story that has left me anxious to continue on to the next book in this series! Keep the box of tissue close at hand; this one is sure to tug at your heart! FIVE stars.
London Belles is a tale of four very different young women thrown together by war. Finding freedom and independence – as well as love, passion and heartbreak – for the very first time, a unique bond is formed as the hostilities take their toll on Britain.

Four lives. One war that will change them all.

When tragedy strikes, Olive is forced to seek lodgers. Three girls come knocking at her door, each in need of a roof over their heads.

Sally has left Liverpool to work as a nurse in London and when she arrives she is a shell of her former self. Where once stood a vivacious, sociable girl, now stands one plagued by homesickness and a betrayal that is devastatingly fresh in her mind.

Dulcie is living the high life in the West End, a world away from her home in Stepney. Working at Selfridges gives her access to the most fashionable clothes and makeup, but at home she is the black sheep of the family; always second to her sister. So she decides it's time to make a bid for freedom.

Agnes grew up in an orphanage, having been left on the steps as a new-born baby. But with war looming, and the orphanage relocating to the country, she must now seek out a job and lodgings. But with change comes exciting new opportunities, worlds away from the life she's known…

As the women prepare for war, all of their futures hang in the balance. Soon their lives will change irrevocably and the home that binds the London Belles is no longer the sanctuary they once sought.

My Thoughts:

Fans of the PBS series, "Home Fires: and "Mr.Selfridge", are sure to be delighted with this first installment of Annie Groves' "Article Row" series! As Britain begins to prepare for the inevitable invasion of German forces, Olive and her daughter, Tilly, find themselves taking in boarders in order to make ends meet. With the addition of Sally, Dulcie, and Agnes, number 13 Article Row quickly becomes more than a boarding house as Olive proves there is love in her heart for just one daughter. As each young woman struggles with her own personal issues, they are quickly bonded by the threats of war. Annie Groves is an amazing storyteller and manages to capture the reader with extremely well-developed characters. I was immediately captivated by this cast of characters who soon felt more like old friends. The insight into the preparations for war and everyone doing their bit to assist in the efforts makes for an intriguing and emotional journey into the past. Keep in mind this is just the first novel in the series, so don't expect the story to come full circle by novel's end...after all it's really just the beginning and what a beginning it is! I can't wait to read the next installment, "Home For Christmas". A wonderful beginning to what is sure to be a wonderful series! FIVE stars.
A powerful First World War story of a woman's quest for justice, from the bestselling author of NOTHING LASTS FOREVER and THE LEAVING OF LIVERPOOL.

Liverpool 1915. Martha Rossi lives in a tenement with her husband and their five children. Despite working all the hours she can, the family don't have much to get by on. When Martha's fourteen-year-old son, Joe, proudly enlists to fight for his country just to earn his mother an extra shilling, Martha is horrified. She realises the government is turning a blind eye to the scores of young boys who are joining the army. Despite her pleas and protests, Joe is dispatched to France within weeks.

Unbeknown to them all, Joe's act of selfless heroism will have huge implications for Martha and all the family. As the dreaded telegrams begin to arrive from the front in France, mothers' hearts are broken across the country. Spurred on by grief of her own, Martha Rossi begins a quest that will take her right to the doors of No. 10 Downing Street. Martha's journey there will be a tough one, but with courage and the support of her friends and family, it will be the most important undertaking of her life.

My Thoughts:

In Maureen Lee's novel, Martha's Journey, the character, Martha Rossi, and her unwavering devotion and determination will remain within your heart long after the last page has been read! Burdened with the responsibility of being the sole wage earner in the midst of poverty and caring for her children, Martha Rossi's life is anything but easy. However, she wouldn't change any aspect of her life if she could just have her son, Joe, home safe and sound. Martha proves there is no greater strength than a mother's love for her children. Although his intentions were admirable, Joe quickly finds himself face to face with the ugliness of war that no one should ever have to bear witness to, especially not a fourteen year old boy from Liverpool. Filled with tragedy, triumph, and a cast of characters that will quickly find a way into your heart, Martha's Journey, is sure to appeal to any reader. I was quickly pulled into this book and found it difficult to put it aside...and of course, a box of tissue was close at hand! Maureen Lee is a truly gifted storyteller and one that I look forward to reading more from in the very near future. FIVE stars.
Happy New Year! The Christmas decorations have been packed away, the cookies have all been eaten, school is in session once again, and my books (and a hot cup of tea) are calling out to me. Of course one of my New Year's resolution is to read more and to read some of the many titles already on my bookshelves. However, over the holidays I did purchase the following titles and I'm quite anxious to dive right in...
It's seems like ages since I've posted here! As I mentioned previously, my son's change in medications has not gone well. I've spent more time at school this year for behavior issues than I care to admit. But, I've started the paperwork to get him an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Autism after the first of the year. I think a re-evaluation is in order. And, any spare time that I happen to find has been spent launching my cross stitch design business, Sugar Stitches, which is going quite well albeit slow.

I haven't had a chance to do much reading to say the least. However, I have added a few titles to my bookshelf. As an avid fan of the PBS series, "Home Fires", I purchased the following titles in paperback. I've started "Martha's Journey" this weekend and so far I'm not disappointed in the least...
By Michael Phillips (FREE)
Description:
Deep Inside Heathersleigh Hall Lie Ancient Secrets Yet to Be Discovered.
Among the gently rolling Devonshire downs of southwest England, the Rutherford family leads a peaceful and privileged life at Heathersleigh Hallthe elegant country estate outside the picturesque village of Milverscombe. Charles and Jocelyn Rutherford consider themselves a thoroughly modern couple, teaching their children to throw off the restrictions of a society long steeped in tradition.
A rising political star in Parliament, Charles spends his weekdays in London, engaged in moving England forward into the twentieth century, while Jocelyn remains at Heathersleigh Hall with her children, secluded from the prying eyes of London society.
But there are secrets beneath this prosperous and contented life. Despite their carefully constructed layers of protection, the Rutherfords are about to be set on a journey of truth that will change them in ways they never could have imagined.

Janell moved to Turnabout, Texas, to put her past behind her and focus on her future—one that doesn't include marriage. But while she plays matchmaker and cares for Hank's children, she loses her heart to the two youngsters…and their adoptive father. If Janell reveals her secrets to Hank, will he still want her to be his Christmas bride?

My Thoughts:

During the late Autumn months of 1897, Hank Chandler suddenly finds himself taking on the responsibility of raising his sister's children, Chloe and Alex. As he returns with the children to his hometown of Turnabout, Texas, Hank is quickly faced with the many challenges of parenthood as well as helping his niece and nephew overcome their traumatic loss and Chloe's life-changing injury. How will he manage to become the parent these children so desperately need and still run his business in town? Hank is determined to find a bride and a mother for his newly formed family but his prospects are limited. However the town's schoolteacher, Janell Whitman, unexpectedly opens Chandler's heart to love and becomes his primary choice for several reasons...if only she would cast aside her fears of the past and accept his proposal. Winnie Griggs has created an emotionally heart-warming story filled with endearing characters as well as hope, love, and faith. This was my first encounter with this particular author and I was quite impressed with her ability to evoke such a wide array of emotions...(yes, I had to reach for the box of tissues on more than one occasion!) The characters felt like old friends and the small town of Turnabout, Texas is one that I would certainly like to visit often. The Holiday Courtship is sure to warm your heart this holiday season and will remain with you long after the last page has been read! Certainly a FOUR star inspirational romance!

The Holiday Courtship is scheduled to be released on December 1, 2015. Paperback and Kindle versions are now available to pre-order.

About Anne Barton

Anne Barton began swiping romance novels off her mom's bookshelf as a teenager, so when she had the chance to spend a semester in London-home to her favorite heroes-she packed her bags and promptly fell in love with the city, its history, and its pubs. She dreamed of writing romance, but somehow ended up a software analyst instead.

Fortunately, a few years and a few careers later, Anne found her way back to writing the stories she loves and in 2011 won the Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart® for Regency Historical Romance. She lives in Maryland with her husband (who, sadly, is not a peer of the realm-but a great guy nonetheless) and her three children, who try valiantly not to roll their eyes whenever she quotes Jane Austen. Her weaknesses include reality TV, cute-but-impractical shoes, and caffeinated beverages of all kinds.

He was the same as
she remembered—confident, solid, and steady. But he was different
too. His hair had turned a darker shade of gold, and he seemed to
have grown all over. His neck was thicker, his jaw stronger. He’d
traded the patched trousers and threadbare shirt that he’d worn in
the stables for buckskin breeches and a nicely tailored jacket, both
of which showed his strong physique to advantage. But the biggest
change in him was the way he looked at her.

And it nearly broke
her heart.

For instead of
looking happy to see her, like he was anticipating a few stolen
moments of summertime bliss, he looked suspicious. The laughing amber
eyes that had always welcomed her to the stable glowered, chilly and
remote.

She choked out the
obvious question. “What are you doing at Lady Yardley’s?”

“I could ask the
same of you.” The words, formal and clipped, didn’t fit with the
Charles she knew.

She raised her chin
and matched her tone to his. “I’m acting as a companion to Lady
Bonneville, and we’re guests of the countess.”

“You’re a
companion?” He raised a brow, skeptical.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Once, she would have
willingly explained everything to him. For even before she’d
regained her voice, she’d shared her whole being with him—she’d
been as honest and open as it was possible for her to be. But now,
his question irritated her. It presumed too much—a connection, a
trust, a bond.

“I don’t see
where it’s any concern of yours.”

“Forgive me.”
But the look he leveled at her belied his apology. It said, Fine.
We can play it that way if you’d like.

Fighting the urge to
shiver, she folded the letter behind her back. She felt for the
drawer, slipped the note through the crack, and slid the drawer shut.
“You’re no longer a stable master.” It was an idiotic thing to
say, but she had to say something—anything—to fill the vast and
unnatural gulf between them.

“No.” His stiff
smile didn’t reach his eyes.

“And I think it’s
safe to presume,” she stated saucily, “that you’re not Lady
Yardley’s companion.”

“I am not.” This
time, his smile was genuine.

Dangerous, that. She
gripped the edge of the desk behind her to keep her knees from
wobbling.

He took one step
toward her. “I’m her steward.”

Ah, he’d been too
busy moving up in the world to reply to her letters. She couldn’t
blame him for wanting to better his station in life—that had always
been his dream. Perhaps he wanted no reminders of the days he’d
spent mucking out stables. But those days happened to be the ones she
most treasured.

“Congratulations
are in order then.”

“I’m grateful to
Lady Yardley for giving me the opportunity.” He took another step
toward Rose. “And I am in her debt.”

The show of loyalty
to his employer stung—especially since he seemed to have forgotten
the sultry summer days and the confidences they’d shared. “I’ve
no doubt you’ve proven yourself worthy.”

He
strode closer, till only an arm’s length separated them. His
clothes might have been more refined, but the man beneath them was
not. He looked like he’d be more at ease chopping wood and
hammering nails outdoors than reviewing ledgers and attending to
correspondence in a study. The merest shadow of a beard covered the
lower half of his masculine face, but his lips, soft and full,
captured her attention. She’d imagined kissing him so many times
that she could almost convince herself she had.

My Thoughts:

In this fourth installment of the Honeycote series, Anne Barton once again proves herself to be a very gifted and talented storyteller of the Historical Romance genre! The only story better than forbidden love is a love story that crosses social standing and class which makes this a quite unique novel. Lady Rose is the sister of a Duke with expectations to marry within the upper echelons of the ton. But, her heart abides by no such rules; Lady Rose is in love with Charles, the handsome, hard-working stable master. Will their love prevail the prejudices of society? Or will they be forced apart? With well-developed characters and unexpected twists and turns throughout, I found it quite difficult to pry myself from between the pages! Fans of Historical Romance are sure to be delighted! FOUR stars.
Libby Joseph is famous for her romantic Christmas stories. Every December, readers devour her books of falling in love against the magical backdrop of the Christmas season. If only Libby believed in the magic herself…

Struggling to finish her current novel, Libby turns to her best friend and neighbour George Donaldson to cheer her up. But George also needs a bit of support himself. Nervous about getting back into the dating saddle after splitting from his wife, he and Libby strike a deal. She will teach George how to win over the ladies, and Libby will in turn be inspired to inject her novel with a good dose of romance.

As Libby and George explore the beautiful White Cliff Bay on a series of romantic Christmas-themed dates, Libby finds herself having more fun than she’s had in ages and…discovers feelings that she never knew she had for George.

But is it too late? Will George win someone else’s heart or can Libby act like the heroine in one of her stories and reach for her own love under the mistletoe this Christmas?

Snuggle up with a piece of Christmas cake and mulled wine, and spend the festive season at White Cliff Bay. You won’t want to leave! Christmas at Lilac Cottage also out now.

My Thoughts:

In this second installment in her White Cliff Bay series, Holly Martin once again serves up a wonderful romance sprinkled with several laugh aloud moments and a generous offering of holiday magic! I absolutely loved returning to the quaint village of White Cliff Bay and meeting up once again with its many endearing characters. It's quite apparent to everyone in White Cliff Bay that Libby and George were meant for each other....well, everyone but George and Libby. The best of friends, Libby and George are completely at ease with each other and accepting of each others' quirks and differences with all the makings for a long-term relationship. As Libby agrees to help George work his way back into the dating scene after the heartbreak of a failed marriage, Libby quickly finds herself falling in love with her best friend. But are these dates with George merely "practice runs" or are they truly falling in love with each other? Holly Martin's wit and humor makes this a thoroughly enjoyable read that had me laughing to the point of tears on several occasions. I enjoyed the style of continuity in which Martin interwove characters and events found in Christmas At Lilac Cottage. She effectively takes the reader back to the same period in time with a new romantic focus. Very well developed and extremely enjoyable! FOUR stars.

My Thoughts:

"The Bargain" By Jane Ashford is an intriguing, suspense-filled historical romance filled with unexpected twists and turns throughout which made it difficult for me to pry myself from between the pages! I absolutely loved these characters. Ariel Harding is a very determined and persistent heroine with a strong sense of independence and a need to uncover the truth behind her mother's death. Lord Alan Gresham is a man of science and reason but certainly has no clue about romance and emotions of the heart. However, his overall impression of women is quickly diminished when he encounters Ariel Harding. Will he ever come to terms with his new found emotions? Jane Ashford is a very talented storyteller with a special gift of creating a romance that has just enough "spice" that doesn't overpower the story itself. Fans of Historical Romance are sure to be delighted! "The Bargain" is a prequel to Ashford's new Regency Romance "The Duke's Sons" series with the first installment "Heir To The Duke" scheduled for release on January 5th, 2016 and is certainly on my list of books to be read. FOUR stars.
From the Design Book of Marcelline Noirot:
The allure of the perfect gown should be twofold:
ladies would die to wear it . . .and gentlemen would kill to remove it!

Brilliant and ambitious dressmaker Marcelline Noirot is London's rising star. And who better to benefit from her talent than the worst-dressed lady in the ton, the Duke of Clevedon's intended bride? Winning the future duchess's patronage means prestige and fortune for Marcelline and her sisters. To get to the lady, though, Marcelline must win over Clevedon, whose standards are as high as his morals are . . . not.

The prize seems well worth the risk—but this time Marcelline's met her match. Clevedon can design a seduction as irresistible as her dresses; and what begins as a flicker of desire between two of the most passionately stubborn charmers in London soon ignites into a delicious inferno . . .and a blazing scandal.

And now both their futures hang by an exquisite thread of silk . . .

My Thoughts:

First in The Dressmakers Series By Loretta Chase, Silk Is For Seduction is a breath-taking historical romance filled with endearing characters, unexpected twists and turns, and heated passion that is sure to warm any reader's heart. My overall favorite aspect of this novel is our heroine, Marcelline Noirot. She's fiercely independent with brazen self-assurance and has a talent for dressmaking like no other with ambition to match. Her character is extremely well-developed and will quickly become a reader's favorite. But will her amibition and determination be enough as Marcelline sets out to win the patronage of the future Duchess? Although Marcelline can be charming and conniving in the most elegant ways, the Duke of Clevedon proves to be quite a match of wits and charm. The journey to a happy ending is never an easy one and Marcelline's is no exception. She is faced with challenges and set backs that would leave most feeling utterly hopeless and unwilling to move forward but she continues forth with heightened determination not only for her own success but for that of her family as well. But, will Marcelline have to push her own needs and desires aside in order to achieve that success? Loretta Chase has created a wonderful beginning to this series that is sure to delight fans of historical romance. I'm looking forward to reading the next two installments in this series, Scandal Wears Satin and Vixen In Velvet. FOUR stars!
An Unexpected Family...

Amish midwife Anne Stoltzfus is used to late-night visitors—but she's shocked to find reclusive bachelor Joseph Lapp on her doorstep with a baby in his arms. Their neighborly quarrels are pushed aside when Joseph explains that his sister has left her daughter in his care—and Joseph needs Anne to be her nanny. Soon they're bonding over baby Leah, and the love they feel for her is healing them both. When Joseph makes an offer of marriage, Anne's painful past resurfaces and she's unsure of what to do. But taking a chance could mean love—and family—are waiting just across the fence.

My Thoughts:

I absolutely loved this heart-warming story from Patricia Davids! The Amish Midwife is a story of love, hope, faith, forgiveness, and second chances sprinkled with a generous dose of humor. Joseph Lapp, brooding neighbor and dairy goat farmer, has experienced his share of heart ache that has left him a bit of a recluse and his goats are nothing more than a nuisance to his neighbor and community mid-wife, Anne Stolzfus. However, these two seemingly mismatched neighbors suddenly find themselves working together in caring for Joseph's niece despite the rumors that begin to swirl through the close knit Amish community. Is it possible that Anne could be falling in love with this gruff and hard-hearted man? Will her charming smile and generous heart melt away Joseph's pain and heartache? I quickly fell in love with Anne's character; she's a strong and independent woman who understand the importance of trusting in her faith as well as the support of her community. With endearing characters and a well-developed story line, Davids' has
created a romance that had me laughing one moment and crying the next. Although this novel is the third in the Lancaster Courtship Series, it reads quite well as a stand alone novel...but I'm now anxious to read the previous two novels as well! FOUR stars!

The first two novels in the Lancaster Courtships series are The Amish Bride by Emme Miller and The Amish Mother by Rebecca Kertz. The Amish Midwife is scheduled to be released on October 20th, 2015. Both Kindle and Paperback formats are currently available to pre-order.
As many of you know, my youngest son is 19 and has Autism. Over the summer months we had to completely switch medications with hopes all would be right by the time school started....this has not been the case. Although his doctor continues to make necessary adjustments, his behavior is really taking a toll on my own mental well-being...lol. Many have said that I have the patience of a saint (for me this really translates to "I'm so glad I'm not your shoes"), however, I am certainly in need of some serious book therapy this week with as many moments of serenity that I can obtain! With that being said, I was quite excited to receive the following titles this past week from NetGalley:
Her life goes from bad to sinister when Julia discovers poisoned sparrowhawks on the expansive estate grounds. And soon after, she finds one of the Hall's visitors murdered—felled by the same poison. Mary Morrison: Simple, devoted, and true, Mary dreams of leaving servitude in Scotland for equal footing in a land of freedom. She and her husband, Angus, set their hopes on a place called Bliss, a frontier town in the wilds of Saskatchewan.

Sophia Galloway: Born to nobility and married to affluence, Sophia wants for nothing, save an heir for the Galloway name. When she becomes pregnant, all her hopes and dreams rest on her baby's future. Sophia and her husband, Hugh, both restless for a new challenge, embark on a journey to Canada where they are sure to be scions of Toronto society.
To both the Morrisons and the Galloways, Canada beckons with the promise of opportunity. Once there, Mary and Sophia go their separate ways, one to conquer elite society and one to conquer the unrelenting wilds of the bush country. Yet they share an unknown secret, a commonality so compelling it will bind them together the rest of their lives.
Brighton 1963. Mary Pickles and I walked along the street with our arms linked, looking in shop windows. We were best friends and together we were invincible.

Dottie and Mary forged a friendship over a bag of penny sweets when they were eight years old. They’ve shared everything together since then – the highs and lows of school, family dramas, hopes and dreams and now, at seventeen, they’re both shop girls, working at Woolworths.

As they go out in the world in pursuit of love and happiness, the simplicity of their childhood dissolves as life becomes more complicated. The heady excitement of first love will consume them both, but the pain of unintentional betrayal will test their friendship in ways neither of them could ever imagine…

My Thoughts:

In her debut novel, The Girls From See Saw Lane, Sandy Taylor has proven herself to be a very talented and gifted storyteller with an immense insight into family, friendship, love, and forgiveness. Dottie Perks and Mary Pickles, living in the seaside resort village of Brighton in East Sussex, England, develop a friendship in childhood that carries them well into early adulthood. They share their hopes and childhood dreams and become ever more inseparable as the years pass. But can this friendship endure an unintentional betrayal and the resulting heart-ache that follows? Is forgiveness possible while they still have the time together to do so? This is one of the most endearing, yet heart-breaking, novels that I have encountered in quite some time and will certainly not soon forget. Taylor's writing style is a treasure to behold with her ability to draw a reader into the story in a very intimate manner. I felt as though Dottie's and Mary's characters were so well-developed and quickly felt as though I were visiting with old friends. Witty and humorous dialogue written with such ease truly brought this story to life and swept me away between the pages. Filled with unexpected twists and turns, you'll want to keep the box of tissue nearby! This is the first installment in the Brighton Girls Trilogy and the second novel, Counting Chimneys, is scheduled to be release in the Spring of 2016...and I can't wait for this next installment! FIVE stars...easily!

This title is scheduled for release on December 4, 2015 in e-book format. However, it is currently available to pre-order for only 99 cents (For US readers)! At this price, it's more than worth it and if your a fan of historical fiction or women's fiction, I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
Whistling Women
By Kelly Romo
Lake Union Publishing
Publication Date: November 17, 2015
Description:
Set against the backdrop of the 1935 world’s fair, Whistling Women explores the complex relationships between sisters, the sacrifices required to protect family, and the devastating consequences of a single impulsive act.

Kelly Romo’s assured and compelling debut novel, Whistling Women (Lake Union; November 17, 2015), takes readers back in time nearly a century to an America where economic pressures and shifting societal norms were shaping a new world. Centered on two indomitable female characters—a long absent aunt and the niece she never knew she had—this wholly original historical novel brings to life San Diego, circa 1935, as its dazzling world’s fair provides the backdrop for a story of family, fidelity, and the choices women have been forced to make to protect themselves and those they love.

After a life of downturns and narrow escapes, Addie Bates has found refuge in an unusual place. The Sleepy Valley Nudist Colony, north of San Francisco, is the brainchild of Heinrich, a German naturist with forward thinking ideas. To promote the benefits of his lifestyle—and the money that would come with an increase in visitors—Heinrich transports the colonists south to San Diego, where they will be an “exhibit” at the California Pacific International Exposition. Addie is reluctant to go, not out of any sense of modesty, but because she has a secret past connection with the city. She moved there as a teenage orphan to live with her then newly married sister, Wavey. Wavey—who for years returned Addie’s letters unopened until the younger sister finally gave up writing—still lives there. With trepidation, Addie hopes for a reconciliation.

What Addie does not know is that Wavey has not one daughter, as she remembers, but two. Rumor, the younger girl, is spirited and inquisitive, and when she encounters the stranger at the door who bears a striking family resemblance, she is intent on figuring out who this stranger is. But, Wavey refuses to tell her daughters anything or even admit that she has a sister. Determined to discover the truth, fifteen-year-old Rumor resorts to petty subterfuge in an effort to piece together the puzzle of the past. What she does not know, and no one is ready to tell her, is that Addie’s transgressions extend to the greatest sin of all: murder.

Steeped in meticulous research that brings Depression-era San Diego and the wonders and oddities of its famed world’s fair to life, and told with great poignancy and candor, Whistling Women underscores the limited choices that women had, not so long ago, in charting their own destinies.
My Name Is Lucy Barton
By Elizabeth Strout
Random House Publishing Group
Publication Date: January 5, 2016
Description:
A new book by Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout is cause for celebration. Her bestselling novels, including Olive Kitteridge and The Burgess Boys, have illuminated our most tender relationships. Now, in My Name Is Lucy Barton, this extraordinary writer shows how a simple hospital visit becomes a portal to the most tender relationship of all—the one between mother and daughter.

Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn't spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy's childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy's life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself: keenly observant, deeply human, and truly unforgettable.
And, after reading Sealed With A Loving Kiss By Ellie Dean last week, I decided to purchase a few similar WWII titles set in England:

This is the gripping new Second World War novel from Sunday Times Top Ten bestselling author of While We're Apart.

After the death of her parents in a bombing raid, Mary Jones discovers a secret in the pages of father’s diaries. Her search for the truth brings her to Cliffehaven on the south coast.

Here, she finds work at the Kodak factory, sifting through the Airgraphs which are being sent from all over the world by the men and women in the armed forces, and by their loved ones. All the while she longs for news of her own sweetheart, fighting in Europe.

With the help of Peggy Reilly and her family at Beach View Boarding House Mary starts to build a new life for herself.

But events that happened eighteen years before still echo, and should a promise Peggy made then be broken, it will have a devastating affect not only on Mary, but them all…

My Thoughts:

This was my first encounter with the Beach View Boarding House series by British author, Ellie Dean and I absolutely loved it! Set within England during the tumultuous period of WW II, Ellie Dean has created an emotionally gripping story with endearing characters that quickly captured my heart. As an American reader new to this particular genre of British sagas, I was immediately drawn into the daily impacts of WWII; Black Outs, Air Raids and personal Gas Masks quickly became a way of life during this period, as well as food rations and everyone serving the war efforts in anyway possible. Peggy Reilly's Beach View Boarding House quickly becomes a refuge for those being evacuated from the bombings of London and serves as the heart of this series. In this particular installment young Mary Jones arrives in Cliffehaven in search of a long hidden truth revealed within the pages of her father's diary. Filled with unexpected twists and turns throughout, I found myself unable to put this book down and found myself wanting more! Ellie Dean is a wonderfully talented story teller and one that had me reaching for the box of tissue on more than one occasion. As an American reader, I must admit some of the wartime acronyms were unfamiliar to me but didn't affect the overall story in anyway, in fact, I found myself googling and researching a bit and learning a great deal. And although this is the ninth installment in this series, it reads quite well as a stand alone novel but if you're like me you'll certainly want to read the remaining books in this endearing series. I highly recommend this with FIVE stars!

For US readers, only titles 1-8 are currently available in Kindle format as well as paperback from Amazon, however, this particular novel in the series can be purchased in paperback format through the Book Depository. (Personally, I would recommend beginning with the first in this series, There'll Be Blue Skies, although book 5, Always In My Heart is currently on sale for $1.99). If you're interested in the paperback formats for any of these titles, I highly recommend looking at The Book Depository. Since they're based in the UK, often times their prices are cheaper and they offer free shipping worldwide as well.

These titles are also available as Audiobooks from Audible.com. I listened to a couple of samples and I'm quite tempted to try a couple of these in audio format as well. (I'm quite smitten with the accents of the British narrators which only bring these novels to life even more!)
